Historic building of the '400 ancient Osteria di Vannozza lover of Rodrigo Borgia | House in Roma
1 Bedroom House in Rione VII Regola, Roma
THE DISTRICT
The Campo dè Fiori area is today an attraction whose charm, typically medieval, remains unchanged.
Its typical shops, delicatessens, wineries, restaurants, bars, pizzerias are of great tourist interest. Every morning there is an important market where you can find products of Italian gastronomy, crafts, fabrics and of course flowers.
Immersed in history and myth, it is one of the favorite meeting points for Italians and tourists. Even at night it is among the most vibrant and trendy neighborhoods of historic Rome.
It is said that until the fifteenth century the whole area was a flowery meadow with cultivated gardens, hence the name. The history and the importance of the place have been enriched in the centuries of charisma and mystery.
In the fifteenth century it became the center from which the Via Florea branched off, a melting pot of roads leading to the Ponte di Sant 'Angelo. In addition, capital executions took place in Campo de Fiori. On February 17, 1600, the fire of the philosopher and Dominican friar Giordano Bruno was set up here, accused of heresy.
A few steps away are Via Giulia, one of the most important streets of ancient Rome, Piazza Navona and a succession of historical sites.
THE APARTMENT
Charming apartment of 50 square meters, on the second and last floor of a historic building of the '400, located in Via dei Cappellari, at the corner with Campo dè Fiori. The location is strategic to easily reach most of the most interesting historical and culinary sites on foot.
The building has been home to the famous Locanda della Vacca for over a century, one of the best known of the time. The owner was Vannozza, lover of Cardinal Rodrigo Borgia, then Pope Alessandro VI from 1492 to 1503. From their clandestine relationship were born four children, including Lucrezia, emblematic and controversial figure, with the fame, perhaps fictional, of poisoner. It is said to carry a hollow ring containing the lethal poison to be administered to its uncomfortable lovers.
It is still visible today in the ancient entrance in Vicolo del Gallo the emblem depicting the symbols of the three families: Cattanei, Canale and Borgia, respectively of Vannozza, of her last husband Carlo Canale and dei Borgia.
