The Villa has been owned by the Odescalchi family, from which it takes its name, since 1597. The Odescalchi are one of the most famous and most illustrious families in the history of Como; Numerous significant personalities emerged from this family, among all the figure of Benedetto Odescalchi who became Pope in 1676 with the name of Innocent XI stands out. During his pontificate, the Pope decided to expand the Villa and to build the entrance arch still existing by the architects of the Como Cathedral. The Villa was the Pope's summer residence.
